A rather small palm from the very arid northeastern Mexico, it forms a slow-growing, rough, solitary trunk topped by an open crown of light green fan leaves. Its high drought tolerance makes it ideal for desert gardens, but it has also been proven to adapt to a wide variety of warm temperate climates and can survive moderate frosts unscathed. It is still rarely found in cultivation.
