In New Caledonia, this species grows only in a single location in the northeast of the island, between 300 and 500 m in elevation. Basselinia favieri forms a slender, smooth, brown stem up to 10 m tall, bearing a compact crown of up to 10 regularly pinnate, slightly keeled leaves on short stalks. The crownshaft is gray-green. Basselinia favieri is surprisingly easy to cultivate and undoubtedly deserves wider distribution.
