Adonidia dransfeldii is very similar to the much more common Adonidia merrillii, with the main visual differences being a slightly more golden coloration, a slender stem, more upright inflorescences, thinner leaves, and less split stems. However, the basic overall appearance is quite similar and, given the relatively close biological distance between Sabah and Palawan, suggests speciation within the last few million years or less. It was finally scientifically described in 2015.
