A massive, single-stemmed pine palm with a thick trunk wrapped in a dense mat of old leaf bases and long, brown fibers. The leaves are enormous, growing stiffly upright with bushy, pinnate leaf segments and silvery-white undersides. The sugar palm probably originated in Indonesia. It is widely cultivated as a fruit tree, especially in South Asia, primarily for its highly sugary sap, which is tapped from the flower spikes. A. pinnata grows rapidly and, at least when young, does well in a bright room.
