This impressive, medium-sized palm forms a robust trunk up to 8 m tall and up to 30 cm in diameter at the base. The spreading crown bears up to 20 large, finely and regularly pinnate leaves, the base of which separates into a mass of leaf-sheath fibers that remain on the upper part of the trunk for several years. A massive, woody bract, up to 1.5 m long and covered with dense, rust-brown down, caps the large inflorescence. Vonitra perrieri is native to rainforests in northeastern Madagascar, where it is found on rocky soil near streams and rivers on steep slopes or in valley floors up to 800 m. Seeds of this species have been unavailable since 2006.
