This easily identifiable Syagrus has leaf bases arranged in five spiral rows and leaf stalks with long, flat, spiny protrusions. The slender trunk usually grows no more than 6 meters tall. The stiff, upright pinnate leaves are whitish on the underside, giving the palm an attractive appearance. In its native Brazil, this palm is one of the most widespread species. In cultivation, however, Syagrus coronata is still little known. It thrives best in subtropical or tropical dry climates.
