This species was once considered extinct, but was "accidentally" rediscovered by John Dowe in 1987 and has been cultivated ever since. It is known from only about 150 adult plants on various islands in the Vanuatu island chain, but is now extinct on the island of Aneityum, which was its original home until the late 19th century. Originally described only from seeds, a full description was not made until 1989.
