Areca tunku is a solitary palm tree growing up to 2.5 m tall. The trunk often has stilt roots at the base, is dull green when young, becoming pale brown, and has a diameter of 2-6 cm. The crown consists of about 8 leaves. A rather small palm native to the mid-altitude rainforests of the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, it has a slender trunk and a spreading crown of flat, dark green leaves with broad segments. The most unusual inflorescence has thick, reddish branches arranged fan-like in a single plane and large, green-white female flowers that create a striking contrast.
