Attalea butyracea is a single-stemmed palm that grows 8 to 20 meters tall. The straight, cylindrical trunk can reach a diameter of up to 50 cm; it is often covered with persistent leaf bases and topped by a crown of 15 to 35 leaves that can reach up to 6 meters long and 80 cm wide. This palm has a variety of uses, providing edible fruits, seeds, oil, leaves, and building materials. It is often harvested in its native habitat for local use.
