This is a natural hybrid that sometimes occurs where many A. alexandrae and A. cunninghamiana grow in close proximity. The trunk, with its thickened base, resembles A. alexandrae. The leaves are usually green on both sides. The fruits and seeds are considerably larger than those of either parent. The name 'Albang' was coined by combining the Australian vernacular names 'Alexander Palm' and 'Bangalow Palm'. The Albang palm has recently become quite popular in Australia. It is said to be better adapted to heat but at least as cold-tolerant as A. cunninghamiana, with mature plants able to tolerate temperatures as low as -4°C. Overall, this palm offers the tropical appearance of A. alexandrae with the hardiness of A. cunninghamiana.
